Proposals for a new front-end visual language for internal apps, based on brand guidelines and applying Material Design principles

Project: Internal Apps UI
Client: European Metal Recycling Ltd.
When: October 2020 - April 2021

After successfully building the front-end for EMR's Group website, I was asked to develop a user interface for the company's internal applications, as their existing designs were dating quickly and needed to be refreshed for a better user experience, and for future scalability.

Through researching current trends in UX and UI, and understanding the concepts of Material Design, I started by creating wireframes, moving to full colour flat plans at certain stages of sign-off.

A so-called 'dark theme' was favoured, as it made important pieces of information pop out. The typography and colour scheme was based on EMR's new brand guidelines, with the layouts being flexible enough to properly display on basic monitors of 19" in size with aspect ratios of either 4:3 or 5:4 (common in the offices of the company's scrap yards), and more modern widescreen displays with aspect ratios of 16:9.

The original brief also requested a display board view to present inbound, outbound and internal vehicular movements. Similar to the live departures board in an airport and with very limited interactivity (for the display of information only), the layout was designed to work in both 'dark' and 'light' themes and on mobile devices.
